Visit of the authorized representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to the Institute of Oceanology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

In accordance with the Agreement on Scientific Cooperation between the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAN) of 6 June 2016 and the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the Scientific Hydrophysical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN in October 2017, as well as on Ukrainian scientists invite the Bulgarian side to visit the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN (Varna, Bulgaria) on April 2-3, 2018.

Representatives were directly involved in working meetings and consultations:

  • from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine - the first deputy chief scientific secretary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, director of the Center for Problems of Marine Geology, Geoecology and Sedimentary ore formation, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Volodymyr Yemelyanov, director of the Scientific Hydrophysical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Alexander Shhibtsov and acting officer Georgi Stefanov, Scientific Secretary of the Scientific Hydrophysical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - director of the Institute of Oceanology BAN, doctor, professor Snezhanka Moncheva, deputy director of the international activity of the Institute of Oceanology BAN, professor Atanas Palazov and scientific secretary of the said institute Dr. Lyubomir Dimitrov.

During the consultations, the parties discussed the conditions and prospects:

  • the freight of the research vessel "Academician" of the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN for conducting marine geological and geophysical and hydroacoustic studies in the western part of the Black Sea in July 2018;
  • renewal of the participation of NAS of Ukraine in the Black Sea Regional Alliance of the Global Ocean Observing System (BlackSea GOOS);
  • cooperation in the field of hydrophysical studies of the marine environment and the exchange of oceanographic data between the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN and the Scientific Hydrophysical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine;
  • joint participation in the development of a project to create a research vessel of the new generation.

Research vessel "Academician" of the Institute of Oceanology, BAN

In accordance with the provisions of Articles 248, 249 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982, the parties agreed to organize these studies roughly from 5 to 15 July 2018. The scientific staff of the Ukrainian expedition will include 15 people - 10 Ukrainian researchers and 5 Bulgarians. It is determined that the flight flight scientist will be the representative of Ukraine, and the deputy head is the representative of Bulgaria.

As expected, the planned marine surveys will have geological and geophysical and hydroacoustic orientation, therefore NAS representatives paid special attention to the possibility of the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN to provide such expeditionary work with appropriate research equipment and equipment.

In particular, the delegation of the NAS of Ukraine conducted fruitful consultations with the secretary of the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN Dr. Lyubomir Dimitrov and the senior researcher of the Department of Marine Geology and Archeology, Dr. Atanas Vasilev, on the organizational and technical issues of expeditionary marine research on the scientific vessel "Academician".

Representatives of NAS of Ukraine also got acquainted with scientific directions and laboratory base of the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN.

The delegation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine visited and inspected and research vessel "Academician" of the Oceanology Institute of the BAN, which had just returned from the regular expedition, and the corresponding scientific equipment necessary for carrying out the planned marine expeditionary research. Representatives of the Ukrainian Academy unanimously noted the high technical equipment of the vessel and the suitability of its equipment for expeditionary work, provided by the plan-program of marine research. In addition, representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine personally became acquainted and established working relations with the individual members of the crew of the "Academician" vessel, as well as with the superintendent engineer Branimir Kostov. This will allow you to quickly resolve issues in the framework of preparation for the expedition.

The delegation of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine also had the honor of meeting with the Minister of Education and Science of Bulgaria, Mr. Krasimir Vilchevym, who at the same time visited the scientific vessel "Academician". The parties expressed their hopes for the development of cooperation between the research institutions of Ukraine and Bulgaria.

During the visit of representatives of NAS of Ukraine to the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN the sides also discussed other issues. In particular, in view of the International Decade for Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), proclaimed by the United Nations Resolution A / RES / 72/73 of 05.12.2017, the special interest of the scientists of both countries raised the issue of the prospects of joint participation in the development of the project with the creation of a "new generation" research vessel.

Upon completion of the working meeting and consultations, Ukrainian and Bulgarian scholars have drawn up and signed a protocol, which stipulates the relevant arrangements.

In general, the authorized representatives of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine consider successful their visit to the Institute of Oceanology of the BAN, and bilateral consultations on cooperation and cooperation in the field of marine environment research - fruitful and corresponding to the spirit and letter of the Agreement on scientific cooperation between the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Bulgarian Academy sciences
